A New Anti-Cancer Combination Against Glioblastoma
Researchers have found a way to eliminate two major cell types in aggressive brain cancer – by combining a special diet with a drug that fights off tumors.
The team details that they used an antibiotic with a high-fat, low carbohydrate diet to destroy mesenchymal and cancer stem cells, found in patients with glioblastoma.
Thomas Seyfried, lead author and Biology Professor at Boston College, says that the keto diet and the ‘DON’ antibiotic is a non-toxic therapy that can effectively manage brain cancer.
In an article titled ‘Therapeutic Benefit of Combining Glutamine and Calorie-Restricted Ketogenic Diet Targeting Late-Stage Experimental Glioblastoma’, the group wrote how the combination effectively penetrated through the blood-brain barrier which shields against intervention and injury. They tested the drug-diet intervention in mice, which proved to be the closest models for human glioblastoma.
Seyfried mentioned that the team added the glutamine antagonist DON and a restricted caloric keto diet to treat brain tumor growth in its late stages. The missing biochemical link gets targeted by DON while the diet elevates ketone levels and reduces glucose at the same time.
The researchers observed that the therapy eliminated tumor cells as well as reversing the symptoms of the disease. Overall survival also improved and inflammation, hemorrhage and edema were reduced. The keto diet and DON delivery required less dosages in order to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.
Seyfried mentions that their study cements the importance of managing glutamine and glucose in fighting glioblastoma growth and warding off brain cancer. Glioblastoma is a condition that doesn’t have an effective medical treatment yet; Seyfried and colleagues believe that this could be the answer to the deadly disease.
Seyfried says that the team’s next focus is to determine if the combination of keto and DON can be used to treat other malignant cancers. It’s been established that glutamine and glucose are both key factors that drive or impede the growth of malignant cancer cells.
