Generate Stem Cells With Fasting
As fasting and intermittent fasting grows in trend, many people are starting to realize the impact that properly executed fasting can really have on your health.
Experts have gone as far to say that fasting for as little as eight days a year can make a dramatic improvement on your health, according to new research from the University of Southern California.
How Fasting Works
Stem cells awake from their normal dormant state, and begin regenerating when you fast two to four days at a time (every six months).
When you commit to this regimen, researchers discovered this practice eliminated damaged and older cells, created new cells, and effectively helped renew the immune system.
Believe it or not, this is the first time any natural intervention has ever been shown to trigger this self-renewal.
For both mice and humans, researchers found white blood cell counts were significantly lowered after extended periods of fasting.
White blood cells are vital to the human immune system but when their numbers declined to a critical point, pathways for hematopoietic stem cells were switched on.
These cells manage the immune system and generate new blood.
“When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged,” Valter Longo of the USC Davis School of Gerontology, said.
This process is akin to recycling for the immune system.
After a period of fasting, human immune systems generate new blood cells when nutrients start flowing back into the body and to connect this back to stem cells, researchers at USC wanted to know specifically what compels the body’s rebuild of those types of cells.
The study found that protein kinase A, an enzyme known to inhibit cell regeneration, was reduced during the fasting process. In addition, concentrations of a growth-factor hormone called IGF-1 were also lowered in this fasting period as well.

There can be great benefits to fasting and confining the time window in which you consume your calories each day, however many misconceptions exist.

1. Fasting is unnatural and unhealthy
Intermittent fasting actually seems to have an overall healing effect on the body by stimulating repair and protection mechanisms.
2. Fasting slows down your metabolism
Research shows that intermittent fasting can have a metabolism boosting effect as it promotes a state of ketosis and increases growth hormone levels.
3. Fasting causes nutrient deficiencies
Of all the intermittent fasting myths, this is one of the most unfounded. When you fast, you use up significantly less nutrients and are able to retain them for future use.
4. Fasting causes muscle loss
A recent study showed that alternate-day fasting for a period of 8 weeks stimulated fat loss on average of 12 lbs while there was no significant loss in muscle mass.
5. Fasting causes eating disorders
It’s not likely that intermittent fasting would cause an eating disorder. However, it *is* possible that a dietary strategy aimed at promoting weight loss would attract those who already struggle with eating disorders.

No matter who you are, the biggest question that always needs to be answered is “Is this right for me?”
