Scientists are currently working to find treatment for a wide variety of conditions through stem cell research. Stem cells are not like any other cells in your body. While skin cells are for protecting your body, muscle cells for contraction, and nerve cells for sending signals; stem cells are undifferentiated cells. This means these cells do not have any particular function or structure.
How Does the Body Use Stem Cells?
Your body uses stem cells to replace your worn-out cells when they die. For example, the lining of your intestines wears out every four days. Stem cells under the lining of the intestines replace these cells each time they wear out. Based on this observation, scientists are hopeful that stem cells can be used to create personalized medicine to replace your body parts using your own body parts.
Scientists intend to use stem cells to replace tissues that are damaged by either injury or disease. The use of stem cells to replace body tissues is called regenerative medicine. For example, stem cells have been used to treat Leukemia. This is a condition that affects bone marrow, the area where blood cells are formed. Patients suffering from Leukemia experience abnormal cell growth. This excessive cell growth overwhelms the stem cells that create blood cells. Leukemia patients get stem cell transplants to provide the blood cells required by the body.
Types of Stem Cells
There are different types of stem cells used for medical treatment.
- Adult Stem Cells: These cells replace the existing cells in your organs when they wear out.
- Embryonic Stem Cells: These stem cells are pluripotent, which means they can be grown into any kind of body tissue.
- Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells: These modified stem cells can become any cell in your body.
Stem cells hold the key to impressive breakthroughs in the advancement of medicine and more effective treatments, with promising signs of finding new treatment for many health conditions. Scientists are focusing on studying how the body creates new body cells to understand how to best use stem cells for medical treatment.
