[VIDEO] How Stem Cells Can Be Used to Reverse Baldness
Please see the brief video overview below…
Research shows that 50 percent of men and 25 percent of women suffer from partial hair loss by the age of 50. Baldness can be caused by age, disease or medical treatment. The current options for treating baldness have proven to be ineffective in restoring the full volume of a patient’s hair. The current options for treating baldness include medications to slow hair loss, and transplants of hair follicles from other parts of the body. However, none of these treatment options can restore the full volume of a balding patient’s hair.
How Hair Follicles Can Be Used to Reverse Baldness
Scientists have closely studied hair follicles and how they can reverse baldness. There are two cells that promote the development of hair follicles called Epithelial cells and Mesenchymal cells.
Epithelial cells help the body create skin, whereas mesenchymal cells help the body create connective tissue. Researchers copy the formation of hair follicles in the embryo to grow more hair follicles. These follicles are then transplanted to the balding area. However, this technique has not been very effective in producing a full head of hair.
Recently, Japanese researchers developed an oxygen permeable mini-chip to scale up the farming of follicles. The researchers were able to grow up to 5,000 follicles at once. The chip is a structure that helps scientists grow follicles and transplant them on the patient’s head to promote normal hair growth. This research was conducted on immune deficient mice where it was noted that lots of new hairs formed within 18 days. Before researchers can test this mini-chip in humans, they have to determine how each patient would get their own personal source of hair follicles.
Stem Cells in Hair Follicles
Hair follicles contain stem cells that are capable of regenerating new hair. In the future, scientists will extract follicles from their patients and expand them by copying the way stem cells work. The increased hair follicle cells will then be transplanted back to cover the balding spots. While there is still a lot of promise using this approach, more studies are required to make it fully viable.
