Eastern Michigan University Student to Have Stem Cell Therapy in Mexico for Multiple Sclerosis

Jan 30, 2020

April Austin of Belleville is looking to get a better treatment for her severe and debilitating condition. She believes that a trip to Mexico for stem cell injections is the key to getting relief from multiple sclerosis.

The 33-year old student was first diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and has experienced symptoms such as hair loss, cold sores, bladder infection and chronic pain. At first she tried to have stem cell therapy at Northwestern University but failed to meet the criteria.

Michigan Medicine neurologist Dr. David Irani mentioned that hematopoietic stem cell therapy is a relatively new form of treatment that can help patients with multiple sclerosis.

Combined with radiation and chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant can eliminate the cells that contain the disease within the immune system, therefore allowing the individual to start over, health-wise.

Austin mentioned that a few of her acquaintances have already undergone the therapy and have had positive results. The treatment will be administered at Clinica Ruiz, in Puebla.
